The seven habits of highly effective Teams

I recently started working for Prowareness, during the application period I was asked to give a presentation about myself. Now, this is one of those moments to sit back and think about yourself. How do I present myself in one or two slides. What is really typical me? What do I believe in? What am I passionate about? One of the slides I made depicted my personal bookshelf because I believe that the books you read (and like!) tell a lot about you.

Stephan Covey
The most important book on my personal bookshelf is without a doubt "The 7 habits of highly effective people" by Stephan Covey. This book, to me, is the one book providing you with a set of habits which guide you to manage yourself, your environment and in the end makes your life and the lives of others a better life.  Now of course this is not easy, it's hard to master these habits in daily life. But although you might never fully master it, while trying you become very aware of your own shortcomings, paradigms and pitfalls. To be aware of these things is step one towards improvement.

Habits and Teams
This week I was thinking about Agile principles, the way Scrum Teams work and how this relates to the habits of Stephan Covey. I suddenly realized how much parallels exist! I have worked it out in the  table below. The habits are described very briefly, if you are not familiar with these, please read Covey’s  book! The last column describes my thoughts on how the habits map to the way Scrum teams work.

Highly effective vs hyper productive
Really good habits or principles are applicable in a lot of situations and are very sustainable. They are recognizable and feel so 'true'. At the time Covey wrote his book ('89), Agile and Scrum didn’t exist as we know it today. Still the habits are very much in line with today’s Agile and Scrum principles and practices. Covey’s book is about becoming highly effective as an individual. As Agile consultants we help teams becoming more or even hyper productive, I am convinced that if we try to apply Covey's habits we get one step closer to reaching that goal!

Ik heb net jou artikel over 'The seven habits of highly effective Teams' gelezen, wat zeer interessant was. Maar ik vroeg mij af hoe het zit met de gewoonte 7: Scherpen van de zaag?

Application in Scrum Teams:

In Scrum, only three roles exist: the Product Owner, the Development Team and the Scrum Master. There are no roles or functions within the Development Team (like analysts, developers or testers). This habit explains why. Everyone in the team is expected to contribute to the sprint goal and help each other, no matter what ones expertise might be.

Take time out from production to build production capacity through personal renewal of the physical, mental, social/emotional, and spiritual dimensions. Maintain a balance among these dimensions.

Application in Scrum Teams:

At the end of each sprint a sprint retrospective meeting is held. The goal is to get better as a team and focus on improving the way of work. Each sprint again.
